Shimba Hills Nature Escape

9 Hours

Overview

Shimba Hills National Reserve provides a stark contrast to the typical dry savannah safari. This ecosystem is defined by coastal rainforest, woodland, and grassland, creating a misty, green environment often covered in morning fog. Because of its proximity to the Indian Ocean, the reserve supports a unique variety of flora and fauna not found in the larger inland parks.

The primary appeal here is the combination of rare wildlife spotting and active exploration. While you will likely see elephants, buffalo, and giraffes, the reserve is most famous for the Sable Antelope—a striking black and white antelope with long, curved horns. The terrain is hilly, offering panoramic views of the Indian Ocean to the east and the Usambara Mountains of Tanzania to the west on clear days.

Trip Highlights

  • The Sable Antelope
  • Sheldrick Falls
  • Elephant Hill
  • Mwaluganje Sanctuary Views
  • Coastal Rainforest

Tour Itinerary

We collect you from your hotel or residence in Diani, Mombasa, or Tiwi. An early start helps us reach the gate while the wildlife is still active.

After clearing the gate, we begin a game drive through the reserve. The roof of the vehicle is popped open for unobstructed views. We spend the morning tracking elephants, buffalo, warthogs, and the elusive leopard.

Accompanied by a Kenya Wildlife Service ranger, we leave the vehicle for a downhill hike through the forest. The walk takes about 45 minutes to reach the falls. You can rest, take photos, or stand under the cascading water.

The return hike is an uphill trek requiring moderate effort. Once back at the vehicle, we enjoy a short game drive en route to lunch.

Lunch is typically served at Shimba Hills Green Lodge or a similar venue with views of the forest, allowing you to relax and watch for birds and monkeys.

We exit the park and drive back to the coast, aiming to have you back at your hotel by late afternoon.
